enriqueta cepeda

citing the pottery of the ancient world as her primary influence, the work of swedish ceramicist enriqueta cepeda has an honesty and purity that feels timeless and contemporary at once. she likes to work with very simple tools, primarily her hands, and never uses glazes, preferring to celebrate the natural textures and colours of the clay. instead, she polishes the surfaces of her works with stone and again with beeswax after firing, connecting with processes that have been used for millennia by cultures all over the world. cepeda says she is not interested in perfection, mastering instead the ability to find moments of harmony in the irregular, and making even a heavy vase feel light and graceful and easy.
